Marijuana Infused Topical for Pain Relief

DIY: Marijuana-Infused Topical for Pain Relief

Many people believe that cannabis offers health advantages, such as pain relief. The uses of cannabis are still being researched, but topicals are a fairly new trend that more people are looking into. Balms, lotions, and salves that are infused with cannabis might offer some relief from localized or chronic pain. You can apply a topical right on your skin, which means it will not make you high. That is a good option to use during the day or at work, when you cannot use cannabis to try to relieve your symptoms.

It is fairly easy to make your own lotions and salves that are infused with cannabis. If you have made cannabis oil or butter before, the recipe is pretty similar.

About Cannabis Topicals

Topicals are lotions, oils, or balms that are infused with cannabis and get absorbed through your skin. Some users believe that they may offer relief for soreness, inflammation, or pain. They are not intoxicating, which means you can experience the therapeutic advantages of cannabis without having the euphoric effects that other methods of delivery have. You can also find transdermal patches, but those are harder for you to make yourself at home. With homemade topicals, you can find the perfect strain, which you may not be able to find as your favourite balm or lotion. You may want one higher in CBD for relaxation or THC for other effects.

About Cannabis Topicals

What You Need

You will need the following ingredients:

  • 7 to 10 Grams of Dried, Ground Marijuana
  • 340 Grams of Coconut Oil
  • 76 Grams of Beeswax
  • Baking Sheet
  • Saucepan
  • Jar
  • Cheesecloth
  • Essential Oil of Your Choice
  • Olive Oil (Optional)

First, you will need to decarboxylate, or activate, your cannabis. You will spread the dried cannabis on your baking sheet and preheat the oven to 115 degrees Celsius. Then, you will heat the marijuana for about 25 to 30 minutes.

While you are waiting, put the coconut oil and olive oil, if you are using it, in your saucepan. Make sure that the heat is low, so you can avoid scorching the oil and stir it consistently.

When the cannabis is done, take it out of the oven and stir it into your coconut oil. Keep it over low heat and mix it for about 20 to 25 minutes. If you are using a saucepan instead of a double boiler, you will need to make sure that the heat does not get too high

You might end up burning off the THC, which can make the product less potent. If you are using olive oil, keep this in mind because the oil has a lower smoke point. Take it off after about 25 minutes and then strain it with a cheesecloth into your jar. Set this mixture aside for now.

Making the Topical

In your pan, add your beeswax and slowly melt it over the heat. Then, add the coconut oil bit by bit. If you are using essential oils, this is the time to add them. You might try tea tree oil, lavender, or peppermint. You only need to add a few drops to make a difference.

Once you have mixed the two thoroughly, you can take the pan off the heat and put the mixture into your containers.

Making Creams or Lotions

You will need to add about 340 grams of aloe vera gel and a few drops of vitamin E oil to turn the salve into a lotion or cream. You can also use cocoa butter and shea butter. To make it more fluid, you can add a bit more olive or vitamin E oil to the mixture.

This will make it a fairly thick lotion, so you should avoid putting it into a bottle that has a pump. It can be hard to choose the best containers, but the ones that you use for your cannabis flower are a good choice. You can also get a small canning jar, which you can get in bulk for a reasonable price. They are also useful for other things around the house.

Other Ideas for Topicals

Other Ideas for Topicals

If you have chapped lips, you may try getting a tinted lip balm. You can add some frozen raspberries or strawberries to the beeswax and coconut oil mixture to make the balm tinted. Remember to strain out the raspberries before allowing the substance to solidify. Flavoured balms can also be made. All you need to do is add some honey to the mixture. Or you can add some cocoa powder to make a chocolate flavour.

Some people who have arthritis enjoy using cannabis topicals. If you want to use topicals for this condition, then you can try adding a bit of cayenne pepper to them. Some people believe that this may offer more pain relief. Just make sure not to use topicals that have cayenne pepper in them around your face and eyes. Avoid touching your face if you have the topical on your hands.

Some people who have migraines like to make a balm to help relieve headaches. All you need to do is add several drops each of lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, and tea tree oil to the mixture. Then, you can apply a tiny bit to the nape of your neck and your temple.

Finally, if you have trouble sleeping at night, you can add some tea leaves, dried rose petals, or chamomile oil to it to make it more relaxing. If you want to feel soothed, you can put a bit on the soles of your feet right before you go to bed.

Closing Thoughts

Of course, the salve will not last forever. However, you can store it in a cool and dark place, which can help it to last a little longer. All you have to do is place the salve on your affected area. Then, you can relax. Remember that if you have an underlying health condition, it is always best to check with your doctor before beginning to use cannabis
